What a great response we had this year to our call for entries into our calendar photo competition! Thanks to everyone who entered – we had over 100 images to consider. As always, it was extremely hard to select the final 12 photos for the 2024 calendar, and the standard just seems to go up every year. The brief for photographers was “Box Moor Trust: for Community and Conservation”.

We put the 12 finalists to the public vote on Facebook to decide first, second and third places. The overall winner was Graham Denney’s fabulous shot of courting kingfishers, taken at Gadespring Cress Beds, which led from the start and finished the count with 188 votes. Second place, with 170 votes, went to Daniel Whittaker for his evocative warm sunset image taken at our Bovingdon Brickworks site. Christine Keilty nabbed third place with her gorgeous photo of the Bulbourne on a frosty winter morning, which attracted 150 votes. Congratulations to them, and to all the other entrants who have won a month in our 2024 calendar.

The calendar is now in stock and available to buy from our online shop at www.boxmoortrust.org.uk at £6.00 + p&p. Alternatively, pop into our HQ in London Road, Hemel Hempstead, HP1 2RE and pick up a copy there – they make great Christmas presents!

Half Term Events at The Old Barn, Westbrook Hay
    Bushcraft Day: Wednesday 25 Oct, 11– 2pm
Acquire some bushcraft skills and learn about the plants and animals found in the woodland. Make something using natural materials and traditional tools, learn how to light a fire using a flint and tinder, then explore the woodland and the creatures found on the forest floor. Bring along your lunch and have a picnic in the woods! For children aged 7+. (Guardians should come along with the aim of getting involved with the activities.)
Tickets: £5 for first child, £2.50 for additional sibling.

Woodland Explorers for SEN: Friday, 27 Oct, 11– 2pm
Aimed at those that might find a busier event overwhelming and need additional time and space to engage with the woodland at their own pace. Activities will be set up around the fenced, enclosed woodland area which can be explored at the child’s pace and will range in capability from bug hunting, woodland instruments, mud kitchen, natural ink painting and others. Bring along your lunch and have a picnic in the woods, or there will also be a quiet classroom available to eat lunch with tables, chairs and hand washing facilities nearby.
Tickets: £5 for first child, £2.50 for additional sibling.
