‘SING, SING A SONG … MAKE IT SIMPLE, TO LAST YOUR WHOLE LIFE LONG’ Joe Raposo (1937–1989)
Some songs definitely last a lifetime, and more. Tunes come unbidden in to my head that my mother sang and which she learnt from her mother, and so on; the simpler the more compelling.
It’s fantastic to be back together, singing in the choir again after the summer break and if you think you might like to join us, you’re very welcome try us out at a rehearsal at the Church of the Resurrection in Grovehill (‘the Church behind the Chippy’ in Henry Wells Square). We meet each Tuesday in term time from 9.45 a.m. and encourage prospective new members to come along for a couple of weeks to see whether we’re for them before making a commitment.
Sing continues: ‘Don’t worry if it’s not good enough for anyone else to hear!’
Many of our long-term members joined believing that they couldn’t sing, sometimes as a result of disparaging comments from teachers. But with help and encouragement from Rufus, our Musical Director, Judi, our Accompanist, and by tuning in to each other, we make a sound which to judge from the reactions of our audiences, is definitely good enough for others to hear and enjoy.
We’re open to adult singers, there are no auditions and we sing in four parts (or sometimes seven or eight, or occasionally 12 – which generally ends in chaos and laughter). And that’s the other good thing about us, we’re kind to each other and we have fun!
If you’d like the chance to sing with us and to listen to some of what we’re working on at the moment, with the added bonus of refreshments afterwards, then come along on Thursday evening, 19th October to Grovehill Community Centre where we’re holding another of our popular ‘Come Along and Sing’ events:
