One Impossible Thing are celebrating their First Birthday as a charity in February. In that time they have distributed more than 1,700 pairs of preloved sports shoes within Dacorum, Luton and Watford. They are holding a Gala Dinner on Saturday 4th February to fundraise for a permanent hub in Hemel, where they can store and distribute the shoes from.
At One Impossible Thing we believe a lack of sports shoes shouldn’t be an impediment to anyone who wants to be active or take part in sport. However the Good Childhood Report 2022 found that 27% of parents and carers cannot afford PE kit for their children. Buying a pair of football boots or trainers for their children becomes the One Impossible Thing. Children end up with ill fitting and worn out shoes, which impacts on their ability to join in activities. And sport helps build children’s confidence and self esteem, as well as keeping them fit. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone could have a pair of suitable shoes to exercise in? Wouldn’t it be great to turn parent’s One Impossible Thing in to their One Possible Thing.
When One Impossible Thing dropped some football boots off to The Adeyfield Academy, Rhys, the PE Lead, said he, “literally had half of those pairs on feet and being used after school, to let kids represent the school without sliding all over the place in trainers. Really does make a difference. .. you are a god send.”
With the cost of living soaring, sports shoes have become a luxury that some families simply can’t afford. But sport helps build children’s confidence and self esteem, as well as keeping kids fit.
One of the sports coaches that One Impossible Thing works with in Luton takes a dance PE lesson each week in a school. A six year old couldn’t take part because he didn’t have any trainers. When One Impossible Thing provided some trainers, the coach said, “the following week I went in to the school. Hehad a big smile on his face because he could participate.”
One Impossible Thing’s Gala Dinner is at the Aubrey Park Hotel. Tickets include a welcome drink, 3 course dinner, half a bottle of wine and dancing until midnight. There will also be a magician and games on the night.
Tickets cost £62 per person and can be booked via the website:
