“I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.”
The American writer, Kurt Vonnegut, was given this advice as a teenager and said it changed him forever:
“I went from a failure, someone who hadn’t been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them”
And that’s what our choir is all about, enjoying what we do and enjoying using music to communicate with each other and with our audiences.
Last month we invited the local community to join us in ‘Feelin’ Good – Let’s Sing‘. We didn’t know how many would turn up, but 70 people came together on a Saturday afternoon in May and sang just for the joy of it (and, of course, the cakes afterwards!).
The feedback from the day was brilliant with 96% of the 51 who responded saying they loved the event with comments such as: ‘Wonderful’ ‘ Very successful’ ‘Great fun’ ‘A very happy afternoon and great fun’.
‘Feelin’ Good – Let’s Sing’, Saturday 7th May, 2022
One comment that rang true was ‘Rufus is a great communicator!’ Rufus, our Musical Director, is indeed a great communicator as well as a talented musician. He is also kind, generous, patient and has a wicked sense of humour. He founded the choir in 2009 with 30 members and we now have well over 100. Our rehearsals are full of fun but we take our music seriously. Everyone does the very best they can according to their ability and many have found that their performance has improved beyond their expectations. We will be hosting another come and sing event on an evening in July – more details in next month’s magazine.
The next date in the choir’s dairy is a free community concert at Grovehill Church of the Resurrection, the Church behind the chippy in Henry Wells Square. On Tuesday 28th June, at 11.15am, after our usual rehearsal, we will open the doors to all comers. Please do join us to see what we’re about. We love nothing more than singing for others and have been learning some new songs this term which we’re eager to try out on a live audience.
Details of our rehearsals, concerts, events and joining the choir are on the website. There are no auditions. Singers of all abilities are welcome at any time – just come along to a rehearsal on a Tuesday morning and give us a try.
