(Howard Jones, b. 23rd February 1955)
My life seems full of coincidences. The copy date for this month’s Boxmoor Direct fell on Wednesday 23rd February, Howard Jones’s 67th birthday and so it is that on that auspicious anniversary I find myself once again sitting here waiting for inspiration.
So here goes. We met again for rehearsals after half term with renewed vim and vigour. The first excitement was a home-made produce sale amongst our members, with a splendid date and walnut cake nearly resulting in a fight to take it away! The choir is holding these events on a regular basis to raise money for our ‘Singing in the Community’ project and we have now added £600 to the fund. Thanks so much to everyone who contributed and even more to those who dug into their purses.
We are moving in the direction of normality with a return to longer rehearsals from 1st March.
We are fielding two teams for the DENS quiz on 25th March. (Modesty prevents me from crowing about our record in these events, though we couldn’t have done better in our last outing.)
Our future programme is now looking firmer with the second performance of ‘Were I Not to Sing?’ (postponed from March 2020) on Saturday 23rd April. The concert was first staged on 9th November 2019 to mark the 10th anniversary of our foundation. The title number is a new work by our musical director, Rufus Frowde, composed to mark the occasion. The lyrics are by Rev. Austin Janes from Grovehill Church of the Resurrection where we hold our weekly rehearsals.
The location for this production is Hemel Hempstead Methodist Church, a light and airy modern church on Northridge Way. More details will be in next month’s magazine and on the choir Facebook page.
Later on, on Saturday 7th May Warners End Community Centre will, we hope, ring with song and laughter when we offer the chance for anyone who wishes, to come along and join us for the afternoon. We’ll be singing for about an hour and a half with home-made cakes and tea to follow.
We love to sing in the community for care homes, charities, and clubs and have a couple of events in the pipeline for later this year.
Our social events will be restarting too. We have a choir tour planned for July and are looking at other events throughout the year.
If you might be interested in joining the choir, please feel free to come along to any of our rehearsals to see what we’re about. All are welcome from experienced singers to complete novices. We meet from 9.40 – 11.30 am at Grovehill Church of the Resurrection, HP2 6BJ.
